Moving to the Canaries? The Ultimate Health Insurance Guide for your Non-Lucrative Visa (2026 Requirements)

The Dream vs. The Paperwork

So, you’ve finally made the decision. You are trading the grey skies for the eternal spring of the Canary Islands. You can already picture yourself enjoying a café con leche in Tenerife or walking along the endless beaches of Fuerteventura.

But before you pack your bags, there is one major hurdle to clear: The Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV).

Since Brexit, the requirements for UK citizens moving to Spain have become much stricter. And the number one reason for visa delays or rejections? Incorrect Health Insurance.

At PBF Seguros, we work with expats every day. We see many people applying with standard travel insurance or cheap policies found online, only to be turned away at the consulate.

Don’t let a paperwork error ruin your dream move. Here is everything you need to know about the 2026 Health Insurance Requirements for residency in Spain.

Why “Travel Insurance” Is Not Enough

The Spanish government has a simple rule for residents: You must not be a burden on the state.

To get your residency approved, your private health insurance must provide coverage that is identical to the Spanish National Health System (Seguridad Social).

Standard travel insurance usually has limits, deductibles, and exclusions. That’s fine for a two-week holiday, but for a residency visa, it will get you a “No”.

The 4 Non-Negotiables for Your Policy

If you are applying for an NLV or Golden Visa in 2026, your policy must check these four boxes. If even one is missing, your application is at risk.

1. No Co-payments (Sin Copagos)

This is the most critical point. Many cheaper policies require you to pay €5, €10, or €20 every time you visit a doctor. This is called a “co-payment.” For the visa, your policy must be “Sin Copagos”. This means you pay your monthly premium, and that’s it. Visiting the doctor, getting a blood test, or even surgery should cost you €0 at the point of service.

2. Full Coverage (Cobertura Completa)

Your insurance cannot have financial limits on essential services. It must cover:

  • Primary care (GP visits)

  • Specialists (Cardiologists, Dermatologists, etc.)

  • Hospitalization and Surgery

  • Diagnostic tests (X-rays, MRI, CT scans)

3. No Waiting Periods (for the Certificate)

Standard insurance policies often have a “waiting period” (carencia) of 6 to 10 months before you can have non-urgent surgeries or give birth. However, the Immigration Office (Extranjería) requires a certificate stating that you are covered from Day 1. At PBF, we work with providers who issue a specific “Visa Certificate” that satisfies this requirement, confirming your immediate access to healthcare.

4. Repatriation (Repatriación)

Since Brexit, many Spanish consulates in the UK specifically check for a “Repatriation” clause. This covers the cost of returning the insured person (or remains) to their home country in case of severe medical necessity or death. Make sure this is explicitly included in your policy conditions.

Wait, what about the S1 Form?

If you are already receiving a UK State Pension, you might be in luck! You may be eligible for the S1 Form, which gives you access to Spanish state healthcare for free.

If you have the S1 form, you technically do not need private health insurance for your residency.

However, many of our clients are “Early Retirees” (aged 45–60) who are not yet drawing their state pension. If that’s you, then a comprehensive private policy is mandatory.
